Montague Island is one of Narooma's main attractions. The Island hosts a wide variety of fish species. The most notable of these being the Kingfish. Other notable gamefish species include black and striped marlin and yellowfin tuna. The current Australian record for yellowfin tuna still stands with a catch at Montague Island. The Island also offers a lot of good reef fishing with species including snapper, pigfish, longfin perch to name just a few as regular catches. The Continental Shelf is just a short 6 kms from the island. It allows the gamefisherman an area to pursue the larger array of gamefishing off Narooma. For the heavy tackle fisherman there are many areas within range of most medium to large trailerboats. These areas include Tuross Canyons, Montague Seamounts, The Kink and the 12 Mile Reef. Closer to Narooma Bar good catches of flathead is available to the smaller boats. A good area to start is the 30 metre line. Land-based fishing offers such species as bonito, kingfish, salmon, tailor, drummer and bream off the rocks. The beaches produce salmon, tailor, bream, whiting, flathead, gummy shark and occasional mulloway at various times. The area around Narooma contains several inlets, which produce a wide variety of fishing and prawning. A short 15 minute drive puts you in an area that produces a good catch of bass. Wagonga Inlet in particular lends itself extremely well to saltwater flyfishing.
